About the University of Utah

Located in Salt Lake City, an urban and high-tech industrial center, the University of Utah enrolls more than 34,000 students annually and is the flagship university for the state of Utah and the higher education hub for the region. The U is a Tier 1 research school and a member of the Association of American Universities—an invitation-only, prestigious group of 65 leading research institutions marked by excellence in academic expertise and research impact, student success, and securing resources in support of core missions.

In addition to its research focus, the university is firmly committed to equity, diversity and inclusion; safety; health and well-being; academic freedom; and sustainability. It is also a member of the Pac-12, one of the nation’s premier athletic conferences.

The U is home to the only academic medical center in the state—University of Utah Health—and provides patient care for the people of Utah, Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, western Colorado and much of Nevada. Home to the Huntsman Cancer Institute, Eccles School of Medicine, John A. Moran Eye Center, Huntsman Mental Health Institute and ARUP Laboratories, U of U Health has been nationally ranked in the top 10 for quality for 11 years in a row, and as the No. 1 hospital in the state for the past six years.

  • The University of Utah campus is 1,534 acres of “you can achieve anything here.” We believe that education holds the promise of unmatched individual and societal benefits that contribute to a better world. This is a campus that integrates learning, living and the world around us. Here, students are granted the freedom and imagination to transform their future through living-learning communities, undergraduate research opportunities and learning abroad at our campus in South Korea and other affiliate programs in Ghana, the United Kingdom, and much more.

Our campus is more than a classroom; it’s an experience, a playground where everything is possible. We focus on student achievement knowing that our efforts will help increase our students’ lifetime earnings, enhance their social mobility, and help them live happier, healthier, and more fulfilling lives. We strive to achieve a healthy, humane campus culture for all students, especially those from historically marginalized populations.

The U has 18 colleges and schools and nearly 100 departments. We also serve as the state’s dental school, law school, medical school, pharmacy school, comprehensive cancer institute, and mental health institute, and confer more than half of the state’s graduate degrees. We inspire lifetime success through learning.

  • The University of Utah faces an unprecedented era of opportunity. We are located in the middle of the nation’s most vibrant economic region—the Intermountain West—in the fastest-growing state in the U.S., with the nation’s fastest-growing economy, in a community increasing in cultural diversity. We are not on the periphery, we are at the very center. Since 2000, the U has launched 300 companies and more than 750 products, generating 37,000 life science jobs.

Our campus was home to the 4th node of the ARPANET, which evolved into the internet. The pixel was made popular by scientists from the U, and Atari, Adobe and Pixar all were founded by U alums and faculty. Our doctors performed the first artificial heart transplant surgery. Huntsman Cancer Institute is home to more than 200 research teams, running between 150 and 200 clinical research trials. More genes for inherited cancers have been discovered at HCI than at any other cancer center in the world.

The co-location of a comprehensive research university and an academic medical center makes the U one of just 12 equivalent institutions in the country. We innovate, improve lives and change the world.

  • Throughout its history, the University of Utah has served as a thought center and gathering space for the community around us. That’s why the state arboretum (Red Butte Garden), the Natural History Museum of Utah, Utah Museum of Fine Arts, Utah Presents, Pioneer Theatre Company (and origin soil of the Utah Symphony, Utah Opera, Ballet West and more) all call our campus home. The U is enmeshed in the community we serve—cultivating community connections, building trust, uprooting injustices, and transforming the future of the state we call home.

Our societal impact stretches far and wide, including neighborhood partnerships, volunteer service projects, interdisciplinary service teams, contributions to public policy, health charity care, large network of alumni, community centers, arts and cultural experiences, and numerous institutes, centers, and programs and a that serve the common good. We embed ourselves in the social, economic, and cultural fabric of Utah and fulfill our responsibility as a model public university. We impact lives through service.
